Nydia track Pelorus Sound - Marlborough Sounds
The Nydia track is a wonderful 2 day walk on a track maintained by the Department of Conservation. It crosses the Kaiuma and Nydia saddles with superb views and follows the sheltered shoreline of historic Nydia Bay. Formed by linking old bridle paths, the 27km track meanders through a variety of regenerating native bush and beautiful untouched forest. On The Track Lodge is half-way on the Nydia Track (approximately a five hour walk from either end).
The Nydia track is classified as a tramping track and passes through lush coastal forest, with rimu, nikau, and beech trees. The track is suited to people of reasonable fitness. Boots are recommended and because some of the streams are not bridged, care should be taken when crossing them after rain.

Mountain bikes are permitted on the track. Best done north to south, the track is quite technical but highly recommended. In wet weather it is very slippery, and best not attempted.
A great hike for bird watchers; hear the songs of the bellbird and tui in the mature forests and hear the wood pigeon flying past. Fantails, robins, and tomtits flit among the manuka and kanuka trees, and weka roam the forest edges. Shags and gannets fish in deep water and herons stalk the shores for food.
